Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for the arts and her creative side. She worked as night nurses to afford her aunt to have the space she required during her day time to enjoy the pleasures of art, literature, as well as theatre. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that art can be used to engage people. DuVernay was educated by her mother, who had a social conscience and instilled DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay was raised living with family members in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the historic civil right's march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama would later inspire her to make a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to take a look at the junk from a home belonging to a jury member. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied by journalism and she decided to move towards the industry of public relations. DuVernay was hired right after graduating from college as a junior publicist at an unassuming studio. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999.
